Bloomsburg, PA, USA—May 30, 2024—Developing recycled materials for use within aviation interiors presents a unique set of challenges, including material traceability, maintaining physical properties, and meeting stringent flame and smoke certifications. SEKISUI KYDEX has been recycling KYDEX® Thermoplastics for over 20 years and supplying recycled products to a wide range of diverse industries.

Most organizations relate sustainable materials to recycled products through a circular economy. KYDEX® Thermoplastics, including materials featuring Infused Imaging technology, are 100% recyclable. Unlike other decorative materials in the market, which require a cap or other non-recyclable layer, KYDEX® Thermoplastics with Infused Imaging technology can enhance bespoke environments without sacrificing recyclability. Because KYDEX® 5555 RCL product portfolio is made from recycled KYDEX® Thermoplastics, it is specifically formulated to exceed low heat release requirements for aviation interiors.

With sustainability increasingly integrated into design decisions, business discussions, and even brand identity, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and CMF (colour, material, and finish) designers are looking to material suppliers to develop tangible solutions. To help the aviation industry achieve its sustainability goals, material suppliers must provide products that provide environmental value and do not compromise on performance or aesthetics.

Thompson Aero Seating, part of the AVIC Cabin Systems group, is actively working to advance its environmental stewardship within the industries it serves. With its recent rebranding initiatives, designed to reflect its evolving ethos and vision, Thompson Aero Seating needed sustainable material solutions that not only matched its new branding but also aligned with the company's strategic direction.

Through a partnership with SEKISUI KYDEX, Thompson Aero Seating was able to work through the technical requirements and validations needed to navigate through the next chapter of its sustainability journey. To make this possible, SEKISUI KYDEX designLab® and appLab Innovation Centers worked to expand the colour palette of the KYDEX® 5555 RCL product portfolio while still ensuring the product line utilizes recycled KYDEX® Thermoplastics. The advanced KYDEX® 5555 RCL product line includes at least 50% recycled material and illustrates how material suppliers and OEMs can work together to develop products that meet design expectations without compromising performance, aesthetics, or sustainability.

See the materials at Thompson Aero Seating’s stand 7B01, 7B04, and 7A02. Also, visit SEKISUI KYDEX stand 5D40 to learn the full capabilities of KYDEX® Thermoplastics’ customizable solutions or explore the journey of sustainability with the Green Cabin Alliance (GCA), a cross-industry group within the aircraft interiors supply chain leading the discussion to address challenges and promote a more sustainable cabin interiors industry.

Bloomsburg, PA, USA—January 30, 2024

Hyperfine, Inc. and SEKISUI KYDEX have joined forces in a pioneering collaboration that addresses sustainability in the medical device industry.

The journey began in early 2015 when Hyperfine, Inc. incorporated KYDEX® Thermoplastics into early prototypes of their Swoop® system. The Swoop system, FDA-cleared in 2020, is the world's first portable ultra-low-field MR brain imaging system capable of providing brain imaging at multiple points of care. This design addresses the limitations of current imaging technologies and aims to bring MR brain imaging within reach, reflecting the dedication of Hyperfine, Inc. to solving critical issues in the medical industry. This partnership has now expanded to embrace sustainability, with early Swoop prototype and research system housings being recycled in cooperation with SEKISUI KYDEX and their in-house recycling center, Ultra-Poly, showcasing how medical device and materials companies can champion a greener future.

Hyperfine, Inc. measures success beyond clinical achievements—it prioritizes its environmental footprint and aims to do so in the context of industry-leading fast iteration and innovation in the medical device capital equipment sector. Consequently, due to the growing number of prior generation prototypes built during the system’s rapid development iterations and retired research systems, they sought a partner committed to the entire life cycle of the Swoop system’s PVC housing, ensuring the material stays out of landfills. With few industry examples to lean on, Hyperfine, Inc. proactively established relationships with suppliers, vendors, and other resources, creating a recycling program for the Swoop system.

In 2022, Hyperfine, Inc. took significant strides by initiating efforts to collect outdated prototype and research system housings for recycling. Leveraging their existing relationship with SEKISUI KYDEX, Clara Dewey, a mechanical engineer for Hyperfine, Inc., reached out to discuss their in-house recycling program with Ultra-Poly. Clara described their journey: "At first, it seemed like a daunting task with no examples to follow, but SEKISUI KYDEX and Ultra-Poly were instrumental in simplifying the process."

SEKISUI KYDEX has long embraced sustainability by recycling KYDEX® materials. As a result of their in-house recycling and partnership with Ultra-Poly, they are currently recycling over 20 million lbs. of regrind annually. Their collaboration with Hyperfine, Inc. marks a milestone, with housings from used medical devices finding new life through recycling and avoiding landfill waste. Mark Denning, Medical Market Business Manager for SEKISUI KYDEX, emphasized their dedication: "We don’t want these housings to be discarded in a landfill when we can recycle them. The Hyperfine, Inc. initiative to return retired housings enables a full life cycle."

In an era where "greenwashing" is a common practice—empty talk about sustainability with no tangible action—the proactive attitude of Hyperfine, Inc. sparked a collaboration focused on sustainable solutions. This partnership exemplifies how medical device companies can positively impact the environment. Clara reinforced their enthusiasm about the future: "We're excited about the prospect of being a medical device company focused on bettering the world and showing it is possible to achieve sustainability success on top of our clinical success."

In the grand scheme of industry practices, it's worth noting that the development and research-related waste generated by Hyperfine, Inc. is consistent with that typically seen in medical device companies and other innovative industries. However, what sets Hyperfine, Inc. apart is its proactive approach to addressing this waste and ensuring sustainability long before commercial systems begin to reach the end of life.

Though their relationship spans almost a decade, the recycling partnership is still in its early stages. Hyperfine, Inc. has developed an in-house program to disassemble retired Swoop prototype and research systems for recycling. They collect and forward the housings to SEKISUI KYDEX South Campus in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. There, Ultra-Poly grinds and pulverizes the housings, creating resin that offers these materials a second life in new applications.

As this collaboration gains momentum, Hyperfine, Inc. and SEKISUI KYDEX are committed to expanding recycling efforts and exploring additional sustainability initiatives. Their shared vision of a greener future sets a positive example for the medical device industry. Hyperfine, Inc. and SEKISUI KYDEX demonstrate how companies can integrate responsible manufacturing practices into groundbreaking medical advancements. Their dedication to sustainability inspires hope for a better planet and encourages other organizations to follow suit, nurturing a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.

Bloomsburg, PA, USA—October 9, 2023

Manufacturing Day is a national event dedicated to education about manufacturing career opportunities and to improving public perceptions of manufacturing. "We have an obligation as an industry to communicate how polymers are a solution to real-life challenges without being environmentally damaging. Our MFD accomplishes this and so much more," stated Sean Stabler, Vice President of Innovation for SEKISUI KYDEX.

With the ever-growing estimated number of manufacturing jobs going unfilled by 2025, SEKISUI KYDEX hosted students from Bloomsburg Area High School, Central Columbia Area High School, and the Columbia Montour Area Vocational Technical School. Students were given the opportunity to explore the various career options available in manufacturing, enabling them to make a more informed decision about whether to pursue college, a technical program, or other post-college opportunities.

This event showed the varying career opportunities at SEKISUI KYDEX, which include inspector/packer, extrusion operators, quality technicians, colour technicians, production engineers, automation engineers, appLab™ engineers, graphic designers, and more, such as traditional business support positions. Additionally, members of the Pennsylvania College of Technology (PCT) were present to provide career guidance and acquaint students with the resources and programs offered by PCT. These opportunities enable students to earn college credits while still in school without incurring costs.

This year, students spent their day exploring how compelling plastics manufacturing can be throughout the various demonstration spaces set up around their Bloomsburg South Campus facility. The program featured a company and careers overview, a campus tour to see how KYDEX® Thermoplastics are made, and several workshops to understand the thermoplastics industry. Stabler continued, "We aim to interact with the students in a playful yet scientific manner, so they have a positive experience that they can reflect upon when considering their future careers."

In the appLab™, students learned about and used state-of-the-art innovation and testing equipment. In the designLab®, they explored colour science by creating their own colours and testing their vision with a colour acuity activity. Students were hands-on with safety by using a simulator to put out fires and performed a 4RKY to learn about hazard awareness. They learned how to keep production running smoothly at the manufacturing station with extrusion parts, maintenance equipment, and an automation demonstration. Circular design rounded out the workshops; here, students learned about KYDEX® Thermoplastics sustainability and using pattern, colour, and texture work in design.
